In the early 1970's U.S. Department of Transportation developed the "state of the art" rapid transit car, intended be a standard design for various rapid transit systems and enabling systems to modernize less expensively through standardization of the ordering process. The cars visited Chicago in 1975 as part of their field testing and demonstration.
