I met Imam on Main Street in Buffalo recently. I spent a few minutes with him learning about his story. He arrived in the United States from Pakistan when he was 18 and lived in Florida. Imam last worked as a limousine driver in Patterson NJ. He described a crippling accident when he missed a stoplight and hit another car in 2012 during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. He arrived in Buffalo a few months ago and planned to denounce his United State's citizenship and recieve a free flight back to Pakistan. Imam told me the story about crossing the Peace Bridge and surrendering to Canadian authorities on the other side. They promptly sent him back to the United States as he has no passport. He's stuck in Buffalo with no ID and spends his days sitting on a heating grate at the corner of Main and West Mohawk Street. I asked Imam if a local mosque might be of some assistance. "There's no point in asking for their help," he said. "They do not practice true Islam." Imam is 42 years old.
