Brooksby House, Largs

Attributed to renowned practice David and James Hamilton, circa 1840. Classical house with symmetrical west elevation (shown). Polished ashlar with channelled and battered basement, windows with architraves or margins, band course above basement and ground floors, modillion cornice and blocking course to all elevations. 3 central, taller advanced bays, basement projects to give ground floor terrace with parapet (originally supporting a verandah). 3 tall round-headed 8-pane sash windows to ground floor. Corniced windows above.

Largs and Millport Weekly describes house being "a yachting residence for Mr Matthew Perston a prominent Glasgow merch ...", but he was bankrupted in 1847 and had to put Brooksby House up for sale. It was bought by the governors of the infirmary who reopened it as a convalescent home in 1897 with accommodation for 24 patients.

In 1846 Perston was listed as a shareholder of the Glasgow, Largs and Milport Steam-boat Company, but his main business was the Bothwell Street Spinning Company, Glasgow.
