5-9 South St Andrew Street, Edinburgh

By Knox and Hutton, 1883. 4-storey and attic, 3-bay Greek Revival office in style of Alexander Thomson with shops at ground. Polished cream sandstone ashlar. Doorpiece at ground to left with fluted frieze, cornice, block pediment and acroteriae; modern shopfronts of zero interest at odds with the rest of the building. Upper floors framed by 2 orders of pilasters rising from 1st floor to eaves cornice. 2nd floor windows pedimented with cast-iron mullions. 3rd floor windows set into pilastrade, paired piers at centre; incised frieze. 3 arched dormers, breaking cornice and parapet with acroteria.

Knox & Hutton practised from 63 York Place, Edinburgh in 1883-87. Their Thomson-influenced detail suggests a Glasgow connection. William Knox was born in Glasgow but trained with Moffatt & Aitken in Edinburgh. At the end of his articles he seems to have formed a partnership with John Hutton and practised in Edinburgh from 1882 until 1886 when Knox went on a world tour. This he broke short in 1886 to work in Chicago in the office of Burnham & Root. There he met John Elliot whom he set up practise with in Toronto where they won the competition for the Confederation Life Building.
