William Campian 1648

St Peter, Colchester, Essex

 

The final memorial in this aisle lies near to the door of the vestry, and has at some time been relaid after being broken into seven sections. One could speculate on whether or not this damage relates to the political nature of the memorial at the time it was first laid. It commemorates William Campian, who was killed during the Siege of Colchester during the English Civil War. The missing text has been inserted from a reconstruction in the guide book:

Disturb not his ashes [re]ader: if thou [likest]

his Iudgment, thou w[ilt] praise his action.
