A well protected little library
High Street, Westgarth, Victoria
Another little library in our area and this one seems pretty well fortified.
The cannon, which is one of two in High Street, actually came from the South Channel Fort in Port Phillip Bay which was part of the 19th century strategic defence network in the bay. I think we were worried about being invaded by Tsarist Russia in those days!
Their history is summed up pretty well here: heritage.darebinlibraries.vic.gov.au/article/381
There has been a push to return the guns to the fort but this has been resisted over the years latterly supposedly so the guns could deter a "yuppie invasion" of Northcote but I think we may have already lost that one!
(The other cannon can be partly seen on the far left of the image.)
