And Who By Fire...

Today, Sunday, is Yom Kippur eve. Yom Kippur is a day of atonement. According to Jewish religion one's fate is written on New Year’s Day and signed on Yom kipper. God may forgive sins man sinned to him, but sins done to a fellowmen are not forgiven unless they are asked by the sinner to be pardoned.

Two days ago, 50.000 people gathered in Tel Aviv to listen to Leonard Cohen.

One of his Famous songs “And who by fire” is based on poetry/prayer written during the Middle Ages, supposedly by Rabbi Amnon from Magenza. According to written poetry tradition the Christian clergy tried to influence Rabbi Amnon to convert to Christianity. The Rabbi asked three days to debate the matter, but when he returned home he made up his mind - to stay faithful to his religion. He decided not to go back to Bishop and for that he was punished, his hands and feet were cut off. Since it was New Year's Eve, they brought him to the synagogue, where he read his poem "Ve Natna Tokef" (Giving effect) then he died in agony.

Cohen’s lyrics are not a translation, he took part of the poem and created his version.

I think it is an interesting timing. Leonard Cohen performing this song in Israel after Rosh Hashanah (New year) and before Yom Kippur.

In our history, in addition to the religious side of that day, 36 years ago another milestone was added – Yom Kippur war 1973. Lest we forget!
