David Lee Guss
Photography homage, Karl Struss, c.1900
Karl Struss (1886-1981) began as a still photographer under the tutelage of Clarence H. White (1871-1925) in New York City. In 1919 he moved to Los Angeles and began work, in the booming film business, with director Cecil B. DeMille. Struss, along with Charles Rosher, received an Academy Award (the first ever given) for his devine cinematography on F.W. Murnau's magnificent "Sunrise." (1927). Struss experimented with 3D cinematography in the late 1940's, a few years before the short lived craze in 1952/1953.
