I’m guessing that the two stone slabs are bridging the gap over the stream of water. Maybe there if the need arises to get into it.

 

Seen on a walk that me and Herb took in Stacksteads. They made some disused railway tracks into a pleasant walkway and bridleway.

The stream would have gone under the old railway tracks.
