The End

This mighty old oak survived the many storms and floods of the winter… which destroyed numerous other trees here in the south of England. I was therefore shocked to find it collapsed in a tragic heap on the north bank of the River Rother last week. With unprecedented flooding over the past few years, large swathes of the riverbank have been washed away as the river increased its width. The course of the river edged ever closer to the oak… until this year, when the soil at the tree’s roots was swept away. With nothing to anchor it on one side, the tree fell.

At Woolbeding near Midhurst, West Sussex.
