As they were....

Reprocessed image, original narrative.......

A humble DMU but one of my personal favourites and, to me, symbolic of train travel in the 70s.

The driver, open-necked shirt and casually looking out of the side window, has already notched the DMU up into first gear and, wrist resting on the regulator, started to draw away. His companion, probably a fellow driver, looks like he's working intently on his brew - they don't make mash cans like that anymore.

Meanwhile back in first class, If there's anyone there that is, the orange curtains and slightly deeper upholstered seats provide a level of comfort that's socially well above the punters in second class but in reality little different, and only worth the extra cost if you can afford it.

But even as the train pulls away, if they see Beryl running down the platform, handbag swinging and late again, will they bring the train to a halt to let her get on? Absolutely - why wouldn't they?

Well that's how I remember it anyway.
