I took this shot on a Freedom of Scotland week-long Rover ticket in 1978. It captures BRC&W class 26 unit 26025 approaching Dingwall station with an unidentified morning service from Thurso & Wick to Inverness.
Unlike the previous year where I'd religiously made a note of the trains I snapped (based on a location / time graph pulled together beforehand for lines north of Inverness (yes, a bit sad), for this year's Rover standards had clearly slipped. What I do know is that arrival in Inverness had been via an overnight train from Edinburgh, and I'd taken the first train out of Inverness to Garve. This was followed by a swift return to Dingwall by, presumably, the first train out of Kyle to Inverness. After snapping a few trains at Dingwall, including this one, I then caught the train up to Thurso where arrival was late afternoon. So, if anyone can piece together what this train might be, I'd be grateful!
Given the dreich weather and 50asa film, it needed a bit of work to make presentable, but I figured the subject matter might give it some interest value.
Update: Thanks to Ian (www.flickr.com/photos/64345695@N06/) there's a convincing case the train is the 5.30am Wick / 5.32am Thurso - Inverness.
