Old hands
Not too many steam shots feature on the stream but, handily located on the S&C for the day, it would have been rude not to capture this one.
Having just exited Moorcock Tunnel, 46115 'Scots Guardsman' is caught working hard at Lunds hauling the 8.09am Lancaster - Carlisle (1Z52), otherwise known as 'The Dalesman'.
Originally designed by Sir Henry Fowler this member of the seventy strong 'Royal Scot' class was built in 1927, and would be subsequently modified and rebuilt in 1947 to a design by Sir William Stanier. It was the last member of the class to be withdrawn from BR service in 1966.
It's hard to believe this locomotive, now in its 94th year, is still allowed out on one of the most taxing mainlines in Britain with 'eleven on' and no diesel support.
