A close call

A shot that's no longer possible after the partial roof collapse at Northwich station on the 18th May 2021.

The section immediately in front of me is no longer in situ, nor is the artful ironwork support column, and the Ticket Office from which the staff member is peering appears to have been partially demolished (perhaps to make safe) based on my visit earlier this week.

This previously unused shot was taken back in 2019 during a rain shower, and where maybe the heavy spillage of water off the awning (you can see it against the side of the loco) was indicative of more serious underlying maintenance issues.

Thankfully no-one got hurt - a miracle seeing as the roof failure, at 10.29am on the Tuesday morning, appears to have been centred above the door where the staff member is standing and where there's regular passenger footfall.

For my visit this week I opted not to take the 'now' shot, which frankly had little appeal for me, but instead post this image showing the splendour of how this ornate Cheshire Lines Committee artefact used to look, fragile as it clearly was. Let's hope that any repairs recognise this Victorian architectural legacy and properly return it to its former glory.

For the record, Freightliner 'Shed' 66622 is captured passing through with the 9.16am Bredbury RTS - Runcorn Folly Lane (6F33) Binliner train. Some digital magic has been performed to remove a couple of folk from the frame.
