Wareham Signal Box

An extended weekend's tour of the western end of the Southern Region in 1977 saw us alight at Wareham, where we were generously invited into the signal box. At the time the box controlled the busy level crossing, as well access to the oil terminal sidings.

This shot features the frame and panel, and the proud Signalman on duty that day.

Fast forward and the level crossing was eventually replaced by a road over-bridge built just to the east, and the signal box closed in 2014 as part of the Poole to Wool resignalling project. So far as I can make out it is still in situ however.

For those interested, when I took the shot, Jimmy Carter was President of the US and James Callaghan was our Prime Minister.
