Jewel on the Crown

Navigating her way through light and shadow as she exits Yorkshire into Lancashire, a well-buffed class 37, no. 37409 "Lord Hinton", trundles up the final few yards to Copy Pit summit tasked with a critical cargo - ferrying the VIPs for a day out in Inspection Saloon "Caroline"

The train is the 8.29am Crewe - Crewe (2Z02) - taking a route which included Chester, Hooton, Helsby, Warrington, Edge Lane Liverpool, Southport, Bolton, Manchester Victoria, Rochdale, Todmorden, Copy Pit, Accrington, Preston, Blackpool, Preston before finally returning back to Crewe at a scheduled 5.14pm.

Quite a day out, and one which most rail-fans would happily sign up for, especially given the heritage traction doing the work. But in fact the VIPs enjoyed an 'early doors' landing back at Crewe some 100 minutes ahead of schedule - perhaps they ran out of crustless cucumber sandwiches en route.

This shot got passed over for the approach shot at the time, with "Caroline" and the Yorkshire countryside being the dominant features. Having taken the trouble to bag a couple of options however, I could hardly let this equally delightful Lancastrian scene go to waste.
