Tug in Boots

With a lack of outings recently it's once again back to the archives and this shot, taken 19 months ago on a warm August day, which sees DBS Tug 60001 hauling the 14.30 Humber Oil Refinery - Kingsbury (6M00) loaded oil tanks.

The train is approaching Humber Road South overbridge - locally known as Boots Bridge seeing as their huge industrial plant is just out of shot on the right. Nottingham City skyline, some 3 miles distant, forms the impressive backdrop. The section of track here is very busy, and the train is on the slow line waiting for a path to Trent Junction where it will take the more leisurely freight-only route through Castle Donnington to Stenson Junction.

About 50 years ago there was another loop to the right of the Tug, and it wasn't unusual to see a pair of coal trains from the North Notts coalfield occupying both lines waiting their turn to move on. My only 8F cabbing took place just here in the early 60s with loco 48127 - I can still remember the heat of the fire and the struggle to clamber down again from the footplate, a big drop for an 8/9 year old lad!
