Last Men Standing

Waiting for a coal train that only passes by but no longer stops, the five cooling towers of Willington Power Station stand sentinel when all other remains of this once busy and vibrant complex have long been razed to the ground.

The 300' high cooling towers, which dominate the skyline for miles around, may yet see future use - planning consent was granted to build a new 2400MW power generating facility, three times the power of the original complex. Whether it will be built or even feature these towers is another matter, and meantime a pair of peregrine falcons are said to have taken up residency.

Not a shot for the purists........
