A couple of relatively new software toys saved this shot:
(1) The CHDK firmware add-on extends some Powershot models including my SX110 IS and (among many other features) allowed me a raw file to work with.
(2) RawTherapee is free and has been updated recently, and it works very well on these CRW Canon Raw files. In this case, the light parts at the front of the neck were over-exposed, and RawTherapee has some very nice highlight recovery & compression features that worked beautifully.
