JEAN BUI AND SYDNEY MCMANUS are interested in generating works that explore function. If design is engineered for the human form, can our bodies serve design? Inspired by minimalism, striving to only show the essentials, the artists’ focus is to reduce ornamentation. For them, “form follows function” (Louis Sullivan, 1896). Borrowing from the Bauhaus, they are seeking a balance between efficiency and aesthetics. In doing so, one might say they are “pointlessly moving about” or “perfecting uselessness” (translated from French by F. Pouillaude, 2014).

As of fall 2018, Jean Bui and Sydney McManus started their collective. Both artists having a background in visual arts as well as dance, this commonality became the reason for collaborating. Their first work together “1, 2, maybe 3” was showcased at Danses Buissonières 2018 as well as OFFTA 2019 as a work in progress. It is now being extended to a full length show to be premiered at La Chapelle season 21/22. The research and creation for the project was supported by residencies with LA SERRE - arts vivant, Danse à la Carte, Compagnie Marie Chouinard and Studio 303 and funded by the Canadian Arts Council and the Conseil des Arts de Montréal.

PÉNÉLOPE ET CHLOË is an artist duo based in Montreal, Canada. In their collaborative practice they work with soft sculptures and everyday materials to explore how we see and relate to colors and shapes, and what is perceived to be mundane. Their playful installations encourage a poetic dialogue with our inner child, enabling us to see the infinite possibilities of interactions between objects and their surroundings.

BREF is a boutique, a gallery, and an event space that offers a unique journey and shopping experience to lovers of art and design, renewed over the months. Based in Montreal, Bref brings under a specific theme, exclusive articles made by emerging artists and brands, both on the local and international scene. What Bref offers is always ephemeral; the Mile End shop is constantly evolving, as well as other venues that are occupied temporarily.
