For the past decade, Montreal has been a base camp for the international success of a movement in alternative music. Arcade Fire, Melissa Auf der Maur, Patrick Watson, Rufus and Martha Wainwright, DJ Champion, The Dears, The Stills, Malajube, Pierre Lapointe, Simple Plan, Sam Roberts, Beast, and many others, all come from the largest French speaking city in North America. This impressive list also contains many veterans of a small but internationally respected music industry event: M for Montreal. More than just a play on words, M for Montreal is a festival that presents ‘export ready’ artists internationally, through a series of highly produced showcases in Montreal and around the world.

M for Montreal provides a unique ‘window on the world’ for Montreal artists. For Canadian acts to truly create economically viable careers, they have no choice but to secure success outside our territorial borders. At a time when the music industry is in a free fall and the federal government is cutting essential international cultural programs such as Trade Routes and Promart, M for Montreal’s work is more important than ever. As Robert Lepage once said, “that which is profoundly local is international.”
