Brookside Mall was a major target in Pietermaritzburg for the #ZumaUnrest insurrection. Looters plundered the Mall and then set it on fire. ATM machines were broken open and every shop was looted. Days later looters from neighbouring squatter communities were still picking through the remains even walking off with electrical cable. Police arrived and shot at looters with rubber bullets, but it seemed to make little difference and the looting continued.
