A Word About New York City

I personally dislike New York city. But credit where it's due.

I stood outside Madison Square Garden for about an hour today and was astonished to discover that lean people outnumbered the obese by a margin of at least 200 to 1.

In that time frame, I observed perhaps as many as 5,000 people and I would estimate that the total number of obese was less than 25.

I suspect that New Yorkers are lean because of all the walking they do. And while the news is all abuzz these days about an obesity epidemic in the United States, the 11-million residents of New York City are not included in that pathetic national statistic.

New York City, for all its faults, is a powerful testimony for the fitness benefits associated with plain, simple, constant walking.
