David Morse
CMS detector
I am a graduate student in experimental high energy physics. I am working on the CMS experiment at CERN, near Geneva Switzerland. I was lucky enough to get to go down in the 100m deep cavern this year while the machine was off for repairs. The size of the detector is hard to convey - so here are some stats:
size: 21m long x 15m wide x 15m high
weight: 12,500 metric tonnes
magnetic field: 4T (about 100,000 times that of the Earth's magnetic field)
