Tynemouth Priory, Tynemouth

Walking in the footsteps of saints and kings at Tynemouth Castle and Priory.

It's quite amazing to discover the history down the centuries of this promontory at the mouth of the River Tyne.

Archaeological evidence of early roundhouses points to the site having been occupied since before AD43.

The early monastic site was attacked and plundered a number of times by invading Danes and finally destroyed.

It was also saw the nuns of St Hilda, who had come to Tynemouth for safety, massacred.

Tynemouth Priory was where Malcolm III, King of Scotland, was originally buried after he was killed at the Battle of Alnwick in 1093 (this same Malcolm who appears in Shakespeare's Macbeth!).

Tynemouth Castle and Priory is in the care of English Heritage and is situated at the end of a positively bustling street, filled with independent shops, eateries and pubs.
