St Romald's Church, Romaldkirk, Co Durham

I gather that the church dedicated to St Romald, in the village of Romaldkirk (formerly North Riding of Yorkshire, but now Co Durham), might well be the only such church dedicated to this obscure saint.

Historic England record that the church was at one time listed as ‘Church of St Romald I the Hermit’. Other thoughts regarding the name have intimated that it might be derived from ‘St Rumwold’, a little-known Saxon saint, who strangely is said to have preached the Gospel after his baptism as an infant!

It’s thought that the original church on this site was a Saxon building. The Saxon church was destroyed by 1086, probably by Malcolm Canmore. Malcolm was a Scottish King who made several raids into North of England in the 11th century.
