Feeling the heat in a Wearside foundry
Visited the foundry in Sunderland this afternoon where they're casting new railings for Sunderland Minster.
Specialist Castings Ltd., the former Jennings Foundry, has a long history on Wearside stretching back 80 years and this afternoon, they were pouring molten metal into moulds, re-creating the original railing design.
This has been achieved by making moulds from a section of the railing around the Minster grounds.
The work is part of the Townscape Heritage Scheme which is seeing a number of projects underway after Sunderland City Council was successfully awarded £1.9m from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
One of the projects underway is on the site of what was the historic village of Bishopwearmouth, part of the Bishopwearmouth Conservation Area.
The work, includes landscaping, new paving, lighting, street furniture and planting.
