Lizard Point, South Tyneside

A particularly rocky stretch of the coast. between South Shields and Whitburn and some of it not that easy to reach. You also have to be particularly careful not to misjudge the tides or you can easily find yourself being cut off!

The arched feature in the distance reminds me so much of Marsden Rock, a little further north along the coast. It was much larger and famous for its bird colonies. It too had an arch, just like the rock in this photograph, but it partially collapsed, Then, for fears of safety, the remaining unstable section of the arch was brought down by explosives.
