Queen of Bermuda at Walker on Tyne

The liner Queen of Bermuda on the river Tyne at Vickers Armstrong's Walker Naval Yard.

The Queen of Bermuda (launched at Barrow 1931) with her sister ship Monarch of Bermuda (launched on the Tyne) were known as the "millionaires' ships" travelling between New York and Bermuda for the Furness Bermuda Line. The Queen of Bermuda served as an armed merchant cruiser and as a troop transport during World War 2 then returned to passenger service on the Bermuda run, being withdrawn and broken up in 1966.

I think this photo dates from 1948 when the ship was being refitted following war service. I believe the larger ship behind is the Strathaird (or one of the other Straths) that operated for P&O and also saw wartime transport service.

The sister ship Monarch of Bermuda returned to the Tyne, to Hebburn, after the war to be converted back to a liner and caught fire, burning out. However the ship was restored and served as a liner under a new name New Australia for the Shaw Savill Line, then as the Arkadia for the Greek Line from 1958.

A useful site to visit for more information on Vickers' ships from Barrow is as aiwacat says below,
