The End Is Nigh - part 2
I've always been a teensy weensy bit fascinated by sandwich boards. Wandering round City Centre Manchester as a kid or turning up to a Manchester City match at the old Maine Road, you could be pretty certain some old guy in a flat cap and a brown overcoat would be standing there with a sandwich board on.
I think I read somewhere it is illegal to wander round parts of London wearing a Sandwich Board. Especially those advertising sandwiches.
I checked Wikipedia only to find that over the years there have been almost two hundred fairly seriously regarded predictions of the end of the world. It was about that figure - I just got bored counting. I didn't make it to the end.
Clearly the vast majority were from one religious group or other but I was quite surprised to find that some famous people such as Christopher Columbus also jumped on the bandwagon. I think the Mayans are responsible for this one. But they're not around to take the rap. Having died out years ago.
I was wondering how notorious, or famous, or whatever, someone had to be to
a. be taken seriously
b. be wrong
