Back to album

I was driving along in the car this morning and a track came on the CD Player (remember those? Round shiny things that existed before "streaming").

In the early 1970s a friend's parents took us on a road trip and a few of the same tracks kept being played at regular intervals on the radio.

One was Mammy Blue by Roger Whitaker (which came up in a movie I was watching last week, spookily enough), another by Terry Dactyl and The Dinosaurs and one by the Canadian singer, Neil Young called Heart of Gold.

I had some cash (given to me as holiday spending money by elderly relatives I assume) and we went into a record shop in Edinburgh and regrettably I chose to spend 50p or whatever on Seaside Shuffle.

Terry Dactyl eventually became Jona Lewie who recorded one of the most enduring Christmas songs of all time, Stop The Cavalry. And something about always being in the kitchen at parties.

I've often thought how cool it would have been to have Heart of Gold as my first ever vinyl record purchase. But here I was, this morning, in my car, still loving the song.

Somewhat amazingly, (but knowing me, not that unsurprising), I have a photo of me in my friend's Dad's car (which I've posted in the comments box below). I assume the photo was taken in 1972 as that is when the song was released. I'm wearing a hand knitted (by my Mum) Manchester City jumper - (who would have guessed back then how fantastically well they would be doing 50 odd years later).
