Back in the early 1990s I had a spark of an idea - lets put some luggage on my 350cc two stroke engined Yamaha YPVS and go riding around Ireland. In most peoples opinion, this wasn't the perfect bike for my wife and I to go touring on.
For years I've not known (or more to the point - forgotten!) the name of the hotel, but going down the road on Google Street View I've found that it is now called The Martello Hotel. It looks a lot different now!
According to the signs, back then it had:-
Manhattan's Night Club
Jack Tak's Inn (or similar - its hard to tell)
In the early 1990s we could not access hotel info online and to be able to book (I don't think that I actually had a computer) so we bought a guidebook and went for the one with most amenities - or so we thought.
We didn't know anybody in Ireland or even anyone who had actually been to the Emerald Isle. So it was a bit of an adventure to say the least back then. We had a great time including a very warm welcome and a good laugh in Jack Tak's doing a music quiz where I won more Guinness than we could actually drink ourselves so we gave it to the local music loving quizzers, which seemed to go down quite well - in more ways than one.
We enjoyed the holiday so much, Mrs K and I went back to Ireland on the YPVS for the next three years and had THE biggest laughs ever and we still talk about those holidays with our friends who came along on the second and subsequent trips, to this very day. Even people who weren't there find the stories really funny. Fabulous memories. And over thirty years later, I still have the Yamaha and went on holiday on it across the Irish Sea again - to the Isle of Man - in 2022.
The photo was taken circa 1993 and scanned on from a print. The Yamaha and Mrs Kpcv (with a perm!) pictured outside the hotel door. I do have one taken closer in - somewhere.
Thanks for looking.
