The changing face of the British High Street
And spookily enough it is actually called High Street.
A few days ago I posted a shot of Woolworths, Birthdays and Visionhire which was remarkable for its sheer mundaneness - but saying that it showed how the high street (small letters) has changed over the years with the demise of all three 'chains'. At the time I didn't know where it was taken - apart from the fact it had to be in Wales due to the dual-language "one-way" sign. This afternoon I stumbled across the photo taken to the left. Stead and Simpson were a chain too (shoe shops?) but R. Charles looked like a one off butchers shop. So due to the wonders of the internet I found that this was/is High Street in Prestatyn, Wales. Then I did "Street View" and it definitely is there - circa #90 High Street, Prestatyn. Sadly R. Charles seems to have moved on.
I've no idea why these photos were taken but its a snapshot of days gone by.
Woolworths is now Home Bargains
