ACME Mill Pendlebury 1980s

Just another mill in Salford, Greater Manchester?

Not really, this one in Pendlebury is relatively famous..

The artist LS Lowry lived not too far away on Station Road - circa a 15 minute walk.

It was used in his painting "Coming from the Mill". The painting is now in 'The Lowry' art gallery on Salford Quays.

The ACME Mill also appeared in a "lost" painting (although it wasn't lost - it was on someone's wall at home for around 70 years!!) called The Mill, Pendlebury. This is now once again in the hands of a private collector after being bought for a couple of million quid or so. (£2.65 m apparently)

The ACME Mill on Swinton Hall Road was demolished in 1984 and as you can see from the photo in the comments box below, this was actually happening when that photo was taken.

I think it was taken from the top of Swinton Town Hall tower aka Salford Civic Centre.

From the Kpcv Family Archives (also known as a box under the bed). Scanned on from a print.
