Blackpool

Blackpool Coral Island 1981

...oh yeah...and the Tower.

Who would have thought that as "recently" as 1981, ladies and gentlemen dressed up in their Sunday Best clothing for a bracing stroll down the Prom in Blackpool?

Would the fortune teller whose premises can be seen here, have foreseen that according to the UK Government's The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) survey in 2019, that eight of the Top Ten of Britain's most deprived neighbourhoods would be in Blackpool. These included areas located just behind the "Prom".

This shot is from the Kpcv family archives, and I've deliberately not corrected the colour (or color if you prefer) to give it an authentic 1980s 'scanned from a print' look. Actually, I've not given it any kind of look - thats how it was printed.

It is kind of relevant to post this photo today for two reasons. This week the Olympus OM2 it was taken with was sold. Secondly Mrs K and I should have actually been strolling down the Prom in the area today but due to HM The Queen's passing - the event got cancelled.

If we had gone there, instead of gently passing some old ladies and gents enjoying the sea air, we would have no doubt been swerving around a load of 'substance users' - or 'heroin addicts' as I like to call them. The only smack anyone saw there back in 1981 would be on the bum of some unfortunate child who had dropped their ice cream cornet on the floor - because "money doesn't grow on trees".

In the early 80s my friend Mike and I had a day and night to remember (and not for the right reasons!) in Blackpool - a description of it can be seen in the comments box.
