Little Yamaha in a big world. (North West England, actually).
On 13th March 2020 before the first lockdown I was on a train to see a friend of mine for a weekend in Edinburgh. This was a few days before the first lockdown of course. I got a call from the engine builder to say I could go to pick it up, which thankfully I managed to do, before we couldn't actually go anywhere for months.
Yesterday, the last bit of the project was finally completed. Who would have thought back then it would take almost two years to the day?
To say that the pandemic hasn't helped would be a bit of an understatement. The main reason being that quite a few aspects needed someone with more ability than I've got to put it back together and/or I needed a second person - eg lifting the engine back in the frame. Massive thanks once again to John, Mark and Brian for helping me out. If, however, anyone sees any reports in the press of a two stroke engine builder being assassinated, it might just be me who pulled the trigger. Knob. I really object strongly to paying someone to do something that they clearly haven't done - but that we thought he had - and that then set the project back by months as we were looking for other stuff that might be causing the issue.
I'm a member of the Flickr Two Stroke Motorcycles group, so some of the following info might be of interest to the members but everyone else might wonder "what on earth is he going on about? And more to the point, who cares" but here goes...
A full engine rebuild including new standard bore pistons and rings, small end bearings, new gaskets (obvs), reed blocks, new reed valves, crankshaft rebuild.
2 Avon Tyres
YSS Monoshock
Tsubaki Gold X Ring Chain
Petronas Fully Synthetic Two Stroke Oil
JT Front and Rear Sprockets
Footrest and kickstart rubber
10 New Chrome Fairing Panel Bolts
Gearbox Sprocket Tab
Yuasa Battery
2 Venhill PowerValve cables
1 Clutch Cable
1 Fuel Tap
4 Brake Caliper Piston Kits
Brake Fluid
2 Carb Float Valve Kits
2 litres Motul 10W30 mineral based Transmission Oil (sourced from somewhere in deepest darkest Europe).
Coolant
and numerous other consumables.
MOT test pass - no advisory issues.
Cost? Seriously, don't ask.
Worth it? Too right.
