Canal

I seem to be taking a lot of shots of canals, lately.

Today I learned something. There is actually a name for people who take an interest in canals. Like an ornithologist likes birds, a philatelist collects stamps and a gongoozler "enjoys watching activity on the canals of the United Kingdom". The word even has its own Wikipedia entry. I haven't had a Flickr album specifically for my canal shots - until now that is.

I did a web search to find the best set of staircase locks in the UK and the Bingley Five-Rise came up - so I went. A fabulous feat of engineering. Opened in the year 1774. The locks raise the Leeds and Liverpool Canal 18 metres up the Aire Valley. The steepest lock staircase in Britain.

This photo belongs to my Northern England, My Yorkshire Pics, Green and my brand spanking new "Gongoozler" Flickr albums.
