Granada Lodge
Another great find from a partial house clearance - a brochure for Granada Lodges. Doing a bit of digging around I think these became Travelodges. There is no date on here but putting my Sherlock Holmes hat on I'm surmising that they wouldn't have used a photo of anything but a brand new car so a J Plate is circa 1991 (but I'm sure someone will be kind enough to correct me if I'm wrong).
So lets have a look at how this has passed the test of time. Firstly theres a fax number but no e-mail address or website address - of course.
Wow, all rooms have telephones (at BT standard pay phone rates)! Even if they had a phone in the room now (which they may well do) - nobody is likely to use them.
It was possible to dine in a Granada Restaurant - never heard of 'em - so I can't imagine them existing now (but again, happy to be corrected). AJs Family Restaurants? Never heard of them, either. Burger King. Now we are talking...a double Whopper and cheese, please.
It was possible to choose a "smoking room" - not any more thank goodness. Yuk.
A COLOUR TV no less, complete with a remote control. Free Sky Movie (just one?), News and Sports channels. Clearly no "Debbie does Dartford" here).
The room would take three adults and one child - uh?
But the most bewildering thing is that using that new fangled internet thingy, Ive just Googled (who would ever have imagined that in 1991) a one night stay at the nearest "Lodge" shown on the brochure to Kpcv Towers - Manchester (Birch) M62 for this weekend and a room can be had for less than £30.
29 years ago = £39.95. Using Google (again) to adjust this for inflation would be a whopping £91.60 today.
Personally I feel a bit sorry for Grantham and Worksop only being able to charge £29.95
Mrs K had a hairdo like that circa 1991 and I had a Vauxhall Astra - ah the memories.
As part of the same house clearance I came across another Granada classic - a photo of the oh so terrible Granada Studios Tour (photo in comments box).
