Lydiate Abbey

St Catherine's Chapel, Lydiate aka Lydiate Abbey

Back in the 1970s I went on a bit of a road trip with my Dad and took some photos of the Chapel / Abbey.

These were never printed but a couple of years ago I found a batch of negatives which are now in my "1970s lost Photos and Negatives set on Flickr.

As I was looking through them the other day I wondered what this photo was of and thought it might be Lydiate.

In the 70's I seem to recall that it wasn't possible to access the grounds. Yesterday I needed to be in the area so decided to check it out as part of my ongoing "Revisited" project.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that there is now a gate and they have done some work in the grounds but it was pretty boggy in parts.

The trees have changed a lot and the ground isn't so barren.

The ruins are next to The Scotch Piper the oldest pub in Lancashire - dating back to the 1300s.

It was nice to revisit.
