Mike outside Blackpool tattooist
In the early 80s there was a trend amongst some of my buddies to buy big old American cars and Mike ended up getting an ex American government Ford 500 Custom, complete with holes drilled in the front wings to pop a couple of Stars and Stripes in!
The only problem was he hadn't passed his driving test but the rule was that as long as you had L plates on and were accompanied by someone who had a full licence, no problem.
So we decided to have a day out in Blackpool with me "teaching" him how to drive. Ha.. After several hours in the town, we returned to the multi storey car park only to find the car wouldn't start. So not only did he not have a 'full' licence, he certainly didn't have any breakdown cover. Or any money. I seem to think that back then ATM Cash Machines weren't very common - I recall writing a cheque in the bank to get some cash so on a Saturday evening in Blackpool there was no chance of getting any!
A few calls were made to call in some favours but no-one showed up. I couldn't leave him cos he couldn't drive it home. So, we had a fairly odd (very cheap) night on the town before returning to the car for a night's sleep. No sleeping bags or anything and it was ***** freezing.
At least the car had two nice big bench seats to shiver uncontrollably on.
I think Mike's face sums the weekend up perfectly.
It looks like bloke's curly "perms" were all the rage at the time.
