The Dunes Hotel and Oasis Lounge Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada

Another one from my seemingly endless shoe box of old photos. "Shoe box" is a bit of a misnomer - its actually a wardrobe full of old photos.

I didn't realise how much history is on here - The Dunes was demolished and The Bellagio now stands in its place.

In the distance on the strip is The Flamingo Hilton, which I understand is still the Flamingo Hilton, but the Barbary Coast Hotel and Casino was replaced by The Cromwell Las Vegas.

I stayed here back in the 1980s during a Road Trip with some of my friends. We hired a fairly cool Ford Thunderbird and shared the driving. We only ended up staying at The Dunes because we could only stay in Circus Circus for one night, as it was full to capacity the following day (due possibly to it being a public holiday/ weekend or something) so they found us some space in here. This photo was taken from our room. The road trip was full of funny incidents, some of which I still snigger about now.

I particularly like the shot as I love old signs and lettering - I have Flickr sets of them both if you fancy taking a look.

I'm afraid I don't know any of the comedians who were appearing at The Comedy Store - Rex Meredith, Harry Basil, Argus Hamilton, Joe Nipote or Brenda Ferrari - but I guess they could be quite famous in the USA.

I am guessing the Don Cherry referred to is the famous jazz trumpeter - father of Neneh Cherry (of Buffalo Stance fame)and Eagle-Eye Cherry.

I also took one from the same position after nightfall.

I could have had a field day cutting and pasting information about Las Vegas and the hotels and casinos from Wikipedia on here, but I am not keen on doing that. I found one photo the other day where someone had cut and pasted a Wikipedia article in about 5 different languages into the Comments box for a photo of a cloud (yawn).

Sorry about the watermarks - I guess a photo from this position of something that doesn't existing any more justifies them?

Taken with my Olympus XA and scanned on using my Canon Pixma MG series.
