Wooden Woolworths of Whitby

There is no reason whatsoever to have taken this shot apart from the fact that I knew that Woolworths or Woolies (as we affectionately knew them as) would be disappearing from the British high street, possibly forever, so it was going to be a bit of nostalgia...eventually.

This was taken in Whitby - I think its a outdoor wear type place now, but I could be wrong.

I had a bit of a soft spot for Woolies, even though I was never quite sure what it was supposed to be.

Back in the 70s it was the "go to" place for 45rpm chart singles - save up 50p and walk to Woolworths to buy the latest T Rex, Wizzard or Slade single. Then back home to wear it out with constant playing. Amazingly (or not!) I've still got them all.

I seem to recall that it was a bit of a destination for shoplifters which can't have helped. I am not sure what the difference between a normal Woolworths and a Woolworths Local was, except the fact that people probably didn't have as far to travel to do their shoplifting.

When the kids were little we used to buy loads of Ladybird clothing from here. No fancy designer stuff for them. Anyone who pays a fortune for a fancy named kids coat wants their bonce feeling, so to speak.

I think they were American but they seemed as British as shepherds pie and a pint of warm beer in the rain.

I think Woolies were sent under as a combination of the Credit crunch and something to do with credit insurance being withdrawn...but don't quote me on that.

RIP Woolworths.
