Ballantrae Scotch Whisky - made in Manchester..by Boddingtons!

Ugh....suffering with a cold.

A few days ago Mrs Kpcv said that she'd had a shuffle round in the drinks cabinet to make way for what appears to be a huge influx of fancy gins received as gifts over the Christmas period. And out came this curiosity. I've got a vague recollection that this bottle came from my Grandad. Sadly he passed away quite a few years ago now. What I hadn't realised....apart from the fact I hadn't realised that we had it at all (!) was this was that the label says its a blend of the finest Scotch whiskies "Bottled by Boddingtons Breweries Ltd, Manchester 3" and the cap says Boddingtons Breweries Ltd Manchester W1290

Manchester 3??? So it maybe it is so old that it also pre-dates the introduction of Postcodes to Britain. Boddies Strangeways Brewery was closed and demolished in the 2000s.

Even with internet search engines I can only find mention of one other bottle of Ballantrae which was described as "rare" in an auction.

Maybe I should be wrapping it up in cotton wool as a collectors item - but what I did was stick in some boiling water, freshly squeezed lemon and honey and make a hot toddy. THE best way to shift a cold. And if it doesn't work - who cares??

If anyone knows anything else about Ballantrae please feel free to let me know.

Looking at the label I thought "that looks familiar". Clearly Ballantrae Distillery didn't actually exist as the Scotch brand seems to be a figment of some Mancunians imagination. Then I realised....it looks amazingly like the Old Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland with the buildings moved around a bit.

In the past Ive demolished another couple of rarities...a bottle of Lancashire Whisky (blended in Wigan!) and some House of Commons stuff. Both nice if I recall.
