Barton High Level Bridge M60 Manchester

I found this old photo of Barton Bridge, Manchester whilst looking through some old stuff at my Dad's.

Before the road became a car park.

And before it was widened to three lanes on each side.

And before The Trafford Centre was situated somewhere to the left.

And before yet another "out of town"retail park / shopping mall was situated to the right.

And before the Chill Factor e was even a snowy twinkle in someone's eye.

And before the american style Golf driving range centre, the JJB football Soccer Dome, the hotels, the office block, WalMart's ASDA, Costco and Krispy Kreeme doughnuts etc etc were situated within half a mile. Come to think of it, Trafford Park could put in a bid to become the fifty-somethingth state.

And before it became the northern equivalent of the M25 - I think it was even called the M63 then.

And before the street lighting was installed.

And when real boats used to sail down the Manchester Ship Canal from Liverpool to Salford, bringing goods inland from all four corners of the earth.

I checked on the web and it used to have the grand title "the eccles stretford by-pass"

Ah, the price of progress.

Just wait 'til they put the water centre or whatever it's called in. We'll be looking back teary eyed with nostalgia to as it is now.

The M60 can't even be the inspiration for the Chris Rea song The Road To Hell.........cos it doesn't go anywhere, it just goes round in a 40 mile circle.
