Hall I'th Wood
A Grade 1 listed building in Bolton which is now a museum. Once owned by Lord Lever, he of Unilever fame.
After nipping round to Turton Tower on the motorbike, I thought "Mmmm, I wonder if there are any other amazing half timbered Grade 1 old listed buildings now used as a museum, within a three mile radius?". After much head scratching, I eventually thought of Hall I'Th Wood which incredibly ticked all of the criteria.
The place was occupied by Samuel Crompton the inventor of the spinning mule (no, not that kind of spinning mule). In an amazing coincidence, Hall I'Th Wood is situated just off Crompton Way.
One thing I'm always fascinated about is where it is. Drive through a fairly modern housing estate and down a little unassuming road and lo and behold. Why not check it out on G***gle Maps (but don't tell Y*hoo) using Street View on Hall I'Th Wood Lane, Bolton.
In perhaps the funniest thing I've read on Wikipedia, it says (surprise, surprise) that it is pronounced Hallith Wood. Really? - I'm flabbergasted.
