A fast declining species in Britain and an only British member of the "metalmark" group whose relatives are found in South America, these Duke of Burgundy [Hamearis lucina] Butterflies are from a colony in North Yorkshire. a peculiarity of this species is that the male can appear to have just four legs as the front pair are reduced in size, so he is on the left here.
