Charlie McClean
Former steam driver, Charlie McClean was 68 when this picture was taken in April 1976 in the Germiston scrap lines. He is pictured in front of “16C” class locomotive No. 815 that he used to drive while at Braamfontein Depot, Johannesburg. Charlie had been associated with steam for over fifty years starting as a cleaner, and progressing through fireman to driver, taking charge on occasions the prestigious Blue Train.
And thanks to Les Pivnic, I learn that Charlie passed on in June 1981.
