From the sea fortress of Suomenlinna (or Sveaborg in Swedish), just off the coast of Helsinki in Finland. Suomenlinna consists of 6 islands and has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Swedish crown began construction of the fortress in 1748 in order to serve as a defense against the Russians. In 1808, the fortress fell to the Russians in the Finnish War, thus launching the invasion and occupation of Finland by Russian forces in 1809. Following the Russian revolution Suomenlinna became part of an independent Finland in 1917, and was later abandoned as a military installation, becoming used instead for civilian administration by the 1970s. Currently, the fortress islands are one of the most popular tourist destinations in Helsinki with hourly ferries shuttling visitors back and forth.
