View of Delft

This picture was taken on the spot where Vermeer painted his famous piece 'View of Delft' (c. 1660). Just like on his painting you can clearly see the tower of the 'New Church' in the distance. There has been a church on that spot since the beginning of the 14th century. The present tower was built in 1872. It has a total height of 108.75 metres, which is only surpassed in the Netherlands by the Dom tower in Utrecht. The royal crypt in this church is the last resting-place for members of the Dutch Royal House.

(Well, so much for the guided tour today. Don't forget the guide! ;-)
