To protect themselves from Chinese pirates, the Spanish fortified their city with stone walls. Close to everything besides the walls and one cathedral got demolished when the US reclaimed the city in 1945. Because of the Japanese tradition of not surrendering, the US decided to demolish the city than risk lives by engaging in building to building combat.
